Shopify customer service apps compared: Inbox, Gorgias, Zendesk, Humane
Published on September 27, 2026

At some point the Gmail inbox stops being enough. Not because too many emails arrive, but because for every request you look up the order in a second tab, the shipment status in a third, and then write by hand a reply you already wrote three times yesterday. The moment you start searching for a Shopify customer service app is usually exactly that one.
The App Store then shows you dozens of results, and the comparisons online are often written by one of the vendors. So is this one, let’s say that upfront. We build Humane. Still, we try to describe the four tools that show up most often in DACH shops the way you would experience them when choosing: by the problem you have right now. All details about third-party products come from the vendors’ linked pages as of September 2026. Prices and features change, so check them again before you decide.
First: the four tools don’t solve the same problem
Before comparing features, it helps to understand the category. The four tools sit in different places:
- Shopify Inbox is a chat tool. It sits on the storefront and in the Shop app channel, focused on pre-purchase questions.
- Gorgias is a helpdesk built for e-commerce. It bundles channels into one inbox and bills per ticket.
- Zendesk is a helpdesk for every industry. It is built for teams and bills per agent.
- Humane is an AI support agent for Shopify. It answers emails and tickets itself, pulls order and shipment data, and learns from your corrections.
One chat tool, two helpdesks, one agent. Keep that in mind and many differences explain themselves.
Shopify Inbox
Shopify Inbox is free according to the Shopify App Store and is built by Shopify itself. It brings chat to your online store and to the Shop app. According to the Shopify Help Center there is an optional “Inbox agent” that answers questions about products, shipping, returns, sizing and store policies, using your product catalogue, your policies and published store content. It is off by default and switched on by the merchant.
What’s good:
- The price. Free, no conditions, straight from the platform operator.
- The sales context. According to the Help Center, Inbox shows you when a customer adds or removes something from their cart, and you can share products and discount codes in the chat.
- The organisation. Conversations are automatically labelled with a topic according to the Help Center, such as Checkout, Shipping or Returns, and can be assigned to staff.
Where it stops:
- It is a chat tool, not an inbox. Inbox is built for conversations in the store and in the Shop app. If a customer leaves the store, your reply is sent to their email address according to the Help Center, but the same page states that the Inbox agent can’t send email on your behalf. Your support mailbox, where delivery questions and return requests land, is untouched by it.
- No ticket system. Conversations have the status “open” or “closed”. If you need approvals, escalations or rules for refunds, you won’t find them here.
Who it’s for: shops with pre-purchase advice needs that still have few support emails. Once the mailbox is the problem, Inbox no longer fits, however good it is as chat. When exactly that point is reached is described in Shopify Inbox is no longer enough.
Gorgias
Gorgias is a helpdesk built for online shops from the start. According to its pricing page the helpdesk scales from 50 to 5,000 tickets a month and is never priced per agent. Voice and SMS channels are add-ons. The AI agent is included on every plan according to the same page, and you pay for it only when it resolves a conversation.
What’s good:
- The ticket model. You pay by volume, not by team size. For shops with seasonal peaks that is the right model, and we have our own position on it.
- The channel breadth. As a helpdesk, Gorgias is designed for many channels. If you want social media messages and emails in one inbox, that is a strong argument.
- The maturity. Gorgias has been around a long time, the Shopify integration is well established, and you’ll find plenty of user reports.
What you should know:
- Two price components. The helpdesk is priced by tickets, the AI agent additionally per resolved conversation. You need to apply both to your volume to know the real monthly price.
- A helpdesk is first of all a tool for people. Macros, rules and views are powerful, but they assume someone maintains them. For a two-person team that is work running alongside the daily business.
Who it’s for: shops with several channels and a team that will actually set up and maintain a helpdesk.
Zendesk
Zendesk is the helpdesk many people know from larger companies. According to its pricing page it bills per agent per month: Suite Team from €55, Suite Professional from €115, each billed annually, Enterprise on request. AI agents are included in all Suite plans according to the same page, and with usage-based billing you pay only for requests the AI agent resolves without escalation to a human.
What’s good:
- The depth. Reporting, roles, SLA rules, workflows. If you run a support team with shifts and KPIs, there is hardly anything Zendesk can’t do.
- Independence from the shop system. Zendesk isn’t tied to Shopify. If you run several shops on different systems or do support outside e-commerce, you have one tool for everything.
What you should know:
- The seat model. The price follows the number of agents. For a shop where the owner plus one helper reply, that is a different calculation from a per-ticket price, and it makes logins for seasonal staff expensive.
- The setup. Zendesk is built for teams, not for an owner who does support on the side. The path from “account created” to “Shopify data in the reply” is longer than with tools that only know Shopify.
Who it’s for: shops with their own support team, multiple brands or systems, and a need for deep reporting.
Humane
Humane is neither a helpdesk nor a chat tool but an AI support agent for Shopify shops. It reads incoming emails and tickets, categorises them, pulls order and customer data from Shopify, checks the shipment status with the carrier and writes a reply in your brand’s tone. You decide per category whether the reply waits for your approval as a draft or goes out automatically. Anything unclear always lands as a draft.
What makes the difference:
- The reply is finished, not prepared. A helpdesk shows you the ticket and the order side by side so you write faster. Humane writes the reply. For a delivery question the current parcel status is in it, and if the carrier hasn’t scanned the parcel yet, that is in it too, instead of “on its way”.
- Corrections become rules. If you change a draft, the agent learns from it. Return windows, goodwill and tone are set once and checked on every reply.
- One price per ticket, every feature. Starter with 100 tickets included, then €0.49 per ticket. Growth with 500, then €0.40. Scale with 1,000, then €0.35. No surcharge per AI-resolved conversation, no feature tiers, cancellable monthly.
- Returns and helpers are included. Returns portal for customers, refunds with approval, helper logins with permissions per task.
Where it stops:
- Shopify only. Other shop systems are planned but not available today.
- Email and tickets. Humane is not a live chat tool and not a multichannel helpdesk. If you need social media messages in the same inbox, a helpdesk serves you better.
- Not everything should be automatic. Complaints, suspected fraud and special cases stay as drafts for you. That is intentional, not a gap. The difference between a bot that sorts tickets and an agent that answers is described in AI chatbot vs. AI agent.
Who it’s for: Shopify shops whose support runs mainly by email and who want to spend less time in the inbox without administering a helpdesk.
How to decide
Instead of a scorecard, three questions that usually settle the choice:
- Where is your problem, before or after the purchase? Before: chat, so Shopify Inbox. After, meaning delivery questions, returns, address changes: the inbox, so a helpdesk or an agent.
- Do you want to write replies faster, or stop writing them yourself? Faster: helpdesk. Stop writing them but keep control: agent.
- How many people reply, and how stable is that? A fixed team with steady volume can plan a seat model well. An owner with seasonal helpers does better with a ticket model.
If you are unsure, count your requests by category for four weeks. That number tells you more about the right tool than any feature list. How to organise your inbox for that is in the complete guide to customer service for online shops.
In short
Shopify Inbox is a good, free chat tool for pre-purchase questions, but not a replacement for a support inbox. Gorgias and Zendesk are mature helpdesks, one for e-commerce with per-ticket pricing, the other for teams in any industry with per-seat pricing, both with an AI agent as an additional line item. Humane is an agent that writes the replies instead of helping you write them, for Shopify shops whose support runs by email. Which tool fits depends less on the feature list than on which problem you have right now.
